If true, this pathway represents a novel mechanism for intercellular communication in the brain. It would also offer a new pharmacological target for modifying NMDA receptor activity during stroke, epilepsy, or other periods of hyperactivity. In support of this hypothesis, serine racemase capable of synthesizing and removing D-serine have been identified in the mammalian brain. Measurement of D-serine concentration is not easy.
